The Herr Adult Medical Day Center has helped hundreds of older adults and their families since its opening in 1975. New Jersey's first medical day center, the Herr Day Center is a non-sectarian medical day care offering medical, nursing, social, recreational and nutritional programs. The Day Center's mission is to promote and maintain each participant's dignity and independence within the community. The professional staff works to restore and to preserve the abilities of each person in order to avoid the possibility of premature institutionalization. The Day Center offers a warm, welcoming environment with a trained and caring staff.
Eligibility Anyone over age 60 and living in the greater Essex area may apply for membership. The Day Center receives grants from governmental agencies and financial assistance may be available for those who qualify for such programs. We also accept Medicaid, Medicaid Waiver programs, the Statewide Respite Program, long-term care insurance or private payment.
Program Hours The Day Center program meets five days per week, Monday through Friday. Clients are welcome to attend two to five days, depending on need, funding and space available. Round trip door-to-door transportation is provided. Our buses pick up clients at home beginning at 8:00 a.m. and buses leave the Center to return clients back home at 3:00 p.m.
Services Provided · Wheelchair accessible transportation to and from the Center provided by trained drivers. · Full-time nursing care for on-going health screenings including blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, and weight checks; dispensing prescribed medications to members; maintaining ongoing contact with physicians and family · A highly trained and caring staff consisting of a supervising medical director, registered nurses, licensed social workers, recreational therapists and volunteers. · Medical services for podiatry, ophthalmology, dentistry and physical therapy. · Recreational and therapeutic activities including art, current events, discussion groups, entertainment, exercise, music, parties, intergenerational programs and trips. · Special programs for clients with Alzheimer's Disease and related memory disorders. · Social work services, support, individual and family counseling and referrals to other community resources. · Nutritional counseling and meals. We serve a morning snack and a hot lunch. All meals are Kosher. Special diets are addressed. · Vocational Workshop where clients who choose to, can work at light assembly and packaging jobs for which they are paid. · Regularly scheduled shopping trips and special outings. · In-house hairdresser, barber, manicurist, coffee shop, gift shop, thrift shop are available at nominal cost to members.
