  Women’s League

Since 1906…..Compassionate…Committed…Caring…

OUR BEGINNINGS…

It was a small group of caring and sensitive women in 1906 who identified a need in the burgeoning Jewish community: many elderly men and women were living alone in poverty and in poor health.  With courage and commitment, they established the Daughters of Israel Home for the Aged on Sterling Street in Newark, New Jersey.

As the needs of the community increased, the women responded by enlarging the facility and, in 1929, moved the Home to High Street, Newark.

As professionals began taking on more of the administrative tasks, the women who, in prior years had been engaged in the actual running of the Home, were now free to direct their efforts toward long-range projects.

In 1956, this relationship was solidified with the formation of the Women's League.

Respecting Jewish family traditions, the Women’s League steadfastly works toward honoring its commitment to the elderly and disabled of our community.  Our 1,000-member League is to the Home what the heart is to the body—a vital source of strength and life-support.

Text Box: We strive to enrich the quality of life for our residents by supporting the many outstanding projects of the Home
through our fundraising efforts and providing volunteer services directly to the residents.

WOMEN’S LEAGUE PROJECTS

Women's League fundraising has greatly enhanced the environment of the Home.

Some of our accomplishments to date include:

· Funding for the kitchen in our West Orange facility

· Refurbishing and operating the Gift Shop frequented by residents, families and staff alike

· Purchase of vehicles for transporting residents on outings and Day Center clients on a daily basis

· Providing matching funds required by the State of NJ Department of Human Services for the Herr Adult Medical Day Center, since 1975

· Providing flowers on Jewish holidays as well as gifts for all of our residents on Chanukah, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day

· Offering educational programs concerning today’s aging population

· Offering Volunteer time and services in many areas throughout the Home

· Purchase of a piano for the Herr Adult Medical Day Center

HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER…

Currently, the Women’s League has undertaken our greatest challenge to date.  We have pledged $1,000,000 toward the “Honor Thy Father and Mother…Keeping the Promise” Capital and Endowment Campaign for the refurbishment of the Women’s League and Slobodien Pavilions.  When completed, these living areas for 100 of our residents will serve as a beautiful, functional and modern model of the ultimate nursing home environment.
