Our Beginnings…
It was a small group of caring and sensitive women in 1906 who identified a need in the burgeoning Jewish community: many elderly men and women were living alone in poverty and in poor health. With courage and commitment, they established the Daughters of Israel Home for the Aged on Sterling Street in Newark, New Jersey. As the needs of the community increased, the women responded by enlarging the facility and, in 1929, moved the Home to High Street, Newark. As professionals began taking on more of the administrative tasks, the women who, in prior years had been engaged in the actual running of the Home, were now free to direct their efforts toward long-range projects.
In 1956, this relationship was solidified with the formation of the Women's League. Respecting Jewish family traditions, the Women’s League steadfastly works toward honoring its commitment to the elderly and disabled of our community. Our 1,000-member League is to the Home what the heart is to the body—a vital source of strength and life-support.
